Washing Wool and Wool Sweaters: 6 Tips on How to Do It Right

Washing wool and wool sweaters: 6 tips on how to do it correctly - bluu - The Washing Sensation

Can you wash wool in the washing machine or does it get ruined? Many people are familiar with the fear that their favorite wool sweater will shrink during Laundry, but washing wool sweaters does not have to be a risk.  Wool does require a little more attention for Laundry care, but with these six Tips from bluu you can wash your wool items easily and safely.

#1 Do not wash wool at too high a temperature

A wool sweater is one of the most comfortable everyday clothing items. It retains heat, is breathable, and feels soft against the skin. At the same time, wool is also one of the most delicate materials when it comes to Laundry. Anyone looking to clean their wool sweater should therefore know what key steps to follow.

Wool is a natural fiber made of keratin, similar to our hair. Just like hair, wool consists of small scales that tangle together under heat and movement. This process is called felting. Once these scales have tangled together, the material shrinks and becomes smaller. That means the wool sweater shrinks not only but also loses elasticity at the same time. That is why it is so important when washing woolto be careful and avoid heat, strong friction, and harsh detergents.

Therefore, importantto avoid hot water when washing a wool sweater, and make sure the water no hotter than 30 degrees , whether you wash your wool clothing in the machine or by hand.

#2 Washing Wool Sweaters in the Machine

Many wool sweaters can be washed safely in the washing machine, as long as you handle them gently. Regular washing machine cycles are too harsh and can damage the fibers.

However, most washing machines have a wool cycle and/or a delicate wash cycle. This cycle reduces drum movement, uses plenty of water, and keeps the temperature consistently low. This prevents the delicate fibers from being damaged. This is the right choice for you, since wool should be washed as gently as possible so the material does not felt or warp.

These cycles work with little movement, lots of water, and low temperatures, which is much gentler on your wool. It’s important to turn the wool sweater inside out first and ideally put it in a laundry bag. This reduces friction and protects the fibers.

  • When possible, choose the wool or delicate cycle
  • Wool at 600 to a maximum of 800 revolutions  when washing
  • If you’re unsure, it’s better to wash by hand

#3 Use bluu for Laundry of wool

Wool, whether merino wool or cashmere wool, is a natural product that is very delicate.

When it comes to detergent, it’s important that it is free of enzymes and free of brighteners  – wool does not tolerate these at all.

Our Laundry Detergent Sheets  are free of both and are perfect for your wool clothing. Both for washing machines and for the hand washing(by the way, you can learn how to wash correctly by hand here.). And please skip the fabric softener!

#4 Carefully treat Stains

If your wool clothing gets a stain, gentle action is also needed here. Do not use harsh stain removers, and do not rub heavily.

Instead, dissolve some bluu Laundry Detergent Sheets in water and gently dab the stain with it. You can also use a brush for this. Repeat as needed. If the stain is stubborn, you can repeat the process with the bluu Stain Soap. Mix it with a little water and dab the spot gently.

#5 As little as possible, as much as necessary

This is especially true for delicate wool: The less you wash it, the better.

Did you know that wool can clean itself? That means you don’t necessarily need a wool detergent. Wool consists of two types of fibers, one that absorbs more moisture than the other. This causes the fibers to rub against each other, releasing dirt. Dirt does not stick to it as easily.

So if your wool clothing smells a bit but is actually still clean, then hang it up to air it out.

Tip:
Wear a T-shirt under your wool sweater so that sweat is not absorbed by the wool. This keeps the sweater fresh and fluffy for longer.

#6 Drying the Wool Sweater Flat

Wool takes a surprisingly long time to dry properly. And since you only wash it in the delicate or wool cycle (with a low spin speed), the clothing will be quite wet. Therefore, it is important to note:

  • Do not wring wool under any circumstances!
  • Lay your wool clothing on a towel, roll it up, and gently press out the excess water.
  • The best way is to dry your wool flat  on a drying rack.
  • The prefer not to hang wool , which stretches the fibers and causes your clothing to sag.

FAQ: Common Questions About Washing Wool and Wool Sweaters

Washing wool does not have to be complicated. You can wash your wool sweater at a maximum of 30 degrees in the wool or delicate cycle in the washing machine or by hand. Use a mild detergent without enzymes and spin only at 600 to 800 revolutions. It’s important to turn the sweater inside out and ideally put it in a laundry bag.

Yes, but only on a wool or gentle wash cycle. Standard programs are too aggressive and can cause wool to felt or shrink. Often, simply airing out the garment is sufficient instead of Laundry. Always be sure to check the care tag, especially for delicate wool types like merino, alpaca or cashmere — these are best washed by hand.

To keep wool sweaters soft and fluffy, proper care after Laundry is critical. Never wring them out, instead gently press excess water out using a towel. Always dry them flat, and reshape them slightly as you lay them out. Avoid hanging wet wool or placing it in the dryer.
