As a general rule, you should always follow the care instructions sewn into your clothing items, as extra caution is critical for delicate materials, colored fabrics, and dark textiles. Stain treatment can even cause new stains to form, if it leads to fading or leaves residue trapped in the fabric’s fibers. For silk garments in particular, you should always opt for professional cleaning to avoid permanent damage.

But how exactly do you remove each individual type of stain?

Dark coffee stains on clothing or textiles

Over coffee applies – just as it does for most other stains – to act as quickly as possible. First, you need to absorb excess moisture from the coffee stain; the best method is to blot the spot with some kitchen paper. Next, wash the coffee stain out by hand using warm water. If the coffee contained milk, you should use a small amount of eco-friendly laundry detergent, e.g. ¼ Laundry strips from bluu. 

If you're out and about and don't have any paper towels handy right now, or you only notice the stain the next day: it's best to Apply a little baking powder to the spot. and leave it to work overnight, then rinse it out with cold water, and wash it in your washing machine as part of your next load, using your eco-friendly laundry detergent.

 

Red wine stains on clothing or tablecloths

Citric acid works extremely well for white garments. You can soak the clothing in a citric acid-water mixture (3 tbsp of citric acid is sufficient) for an extended period, ideally overnight. Afterwards, wash the garments in your washing machine. Warning: Citric acid may cause fading on colored or dark fabrics.

For colorful or dark laundry that has deodorant stains or sweat stains, a different solution is recommended: Vinegar, or more precisely, vinegar concentrate. For this, add the clothing items to a vinegar-water mixture (in Ratio 1:4) leave to soak for an extended period, ideally overnight. Afterwards, rinse it and wash as normal in the washing machine. 

Especially stubborn sweat stains or deodorant stains can also be with baking powder to remove it, though special care must be taken with colored and dark laundry. Here’s how it works: first, mix one packet of baking soda with water to create a paste. Spread this paste directly onto the deodorant stains on your clothing, let it sit for approximately 15 minutes, then wash the clothes in your washing machine using your standard wash cycle. 

 

Baby stool or vomit

For stains from baby stool or vomit, it helps to treat the stains rinse thoroughly with cold waterrub any existing residue with a hard laundry soap (or alternatively a water-vinegar mixture), then rinse it out, and if possible, leave it to dry in the sun. Afterwards, wash the clothing items in the washing machine.

Stubborn wax stains and wax residue

Here’s another common problem that’s not exactly easy to fix: wax stains or leftover wax residue.
