How to properly wash functional sportswear

“Do more sports!” is the New Year’s resolution for many people, and it might also drive you to go to the gym more often. Of course, good sportswear is part of working out. To help it retain its quality and functionality for as long as possible, proper cleaning and care are essential.

We have compiled the most important Tips for you on the topic of washing sportswear.

  • Only wash in the machine every third to fourth time; hand wash in between
  • Low temperature and low spin cycle
  • No fabric softener
  • Turn inside out and close Velcro and zippers
  • Wash synthetic fabrics and cotton separately
  • Hang instead of using the dryer

How often do you wash your sportswear?

Your sportswear shouldn’t go in the washing machine after every workout. As always, the more you wash it, the faster it wears out.

Instead, try hand washing. The bluu Laundry Detergent Sheets are perfect for hand washing: just mix one (or half, depending on the load size) strip in a bowl of water.

Only wash your sportswear in the machine every third or fourth time.

How do you wash your sportswear?

Most sportswear is made of polyester or polypropylene and perfectly suited for athletic activity: they offer great freedom of movement and dry quickly. To preserve this functionality, there are a few things you should keep in mind when handling Laundry.

  • Wash at low temperature (30 to max 40 degrees) and a low spin speed (no more than 800 revolutions). But please check the label to be sure.
  • Don’t use fabric softener! It can clog the fabric structure and reduce breathability.
  • Turn the clothes inside out and close all zippers, especially Velcro fasteners. This way, you’ll avoid holes and the Velcro will stay good longer.
  • Wash your polyester clothing separately. Cotton fibers can get stuck in your sportswear and also reduce breathability.
  • Special care for fleece clothing: Over time, small pilling forms on the surface. To keep it soft: turn inside out, maximum 30 degrees, and only a short spin cycle.

To ensure your sportswear is bacteria and germ-free even at low washing temperatures, from a wash temperature of 20°C, put the bluu silvertrooper in the washing machine. The silver cloth has a strong antibacterial effect, ensures longer-lasting freshness for your sportswear thanks to its freshness reserve, and leaves it clean and fresh. Discover Silvertrooper now!

Air out instead of Laundry

If you have not completely sweated through your sportswear, you can air it out instead of Laundry.

Bacteria love moisture and multiply quickly. That’s why you should take your sportswear out of your gym bag as soon as possible and hang it out to fresh air.

Don’t forget the gym bag

Speaking of gym bags: they need to be cleaned regularly too.

For that, take a little Citric Acid or vinegar and wipe the inside of your bag with a cloth.

How do you dry your sportswear?

Sportswear doesn’t belong in the dryer. Microfibers can also be damaged here, which affects the clothing’s quality.

Hang the items up – but not in direct sunlight, as that affects the stretch of elastane fibers.

How do you clean your training shoes?

Your gym and running shoes also need special care from time to time, as they can start to smell. For that, you can put them in a pillowcase and wash at 30 degrees. Afterwards, they are stuffed with newspaper and hung on the clothesline.

The sports shoes still smell bad?

Put them in the freezer overnight! First, wrap them in a plastic bag and seal it before placing it in your freezer. Bacteria rarely survive freezing temperatures.
