Clothing made from wood fibers: the right care for Lyocell

Clothing made from wood fibers: The proper care for Lyocell - bluu - The Wash Sensation

In today's blog post, we are not only focusing on clothing care and cleaning as we usually do. Today we would like to introduce you to wood fiber/Lyocell textiles from the Swiss company Muntagnard and highlight their key benefits. We will also explain why it is important to prioritize Sustainability not only when it comes to Laundry – but also when choosing which clothing to purchase.

The fast fashion cycle was unfortunately more devastating than ever in 2022, which is why we start this post with a few facts and figures.

Did you know that

  • The average Swiss person buys 60 new clothing items?
  • Of those, around 40% are never or barely ever worn?
  • More than six kilograms of clothing end up in the used clothing collection each year –   per person?
  • Yet only around 20% of that is actually reused as clothing; the rest is incinerated!

Bad Fast Fashion

These numbers speak for themselves: This fashion cycle (also called fast fashion) is fatal and devastating for our environment. Because producing clothing uses an incredible amount of resources: A cotton jeans, for example, uses around 8,000 liters of water to manufacture. The pesticides used contaminate groundwater and soil. The long transport routes until the jeans end up in your closet cause a lot of CO₂. Not to mention the poor working conditions of the workers who made your garment.

Break the fashion cycle

It is therefore essential to break this cycle. Choosing sustainable fashion, wearing clothes longer, and washing them less frequently are important steps in this direction.

Like bluu, the Swiss company Muntagnard is also well aware of these issues, and both address this topic in their own respective way.

The Muntagnard label

The Graubünden-based fashion label Muntagnard has been creating next-level sustainable apparel since 2016. For the brand, it is especially important to produce high-quality, stylish, comfortable products made from recyclable and biodegradable materials. "All our products are rooted in our highest standards for Sustainability and responsibility," explains co-founder Dario. "If no solution exists on the market that meets our requirements, we develop it ourselves."

The LEGNA line

That's how their LEGNA line (= wood) was created: The world's first garment with the flustix plastic-free certificate! The T-shirts are made from 100% wood-based fibers, specifically Lyocell,   from Europe, and are fully recyclable and biodegradable.

It is rare these days for an entire garment to be made from the same material. And Muntagnard is serious about this: The entire T-shirt is made from this wood fiber. From the fabric to the sewing thread to the label: Everything is either recyclable or biodegradable.

Sewing threads in particular are usually made of material with a high plastic content. Every wash cycle releases microfibers that are harmful to water and soil.

Lyocell clothing is not only great for your conscience and the environment. It also has wonderful benefits.

The best properties of Lyocell:

  • Especially soft
  • Temperature-regulating like silk
  • More breathable than cotton
  • Less prone to odors than synthetic fabrics
  • Extremely sustainable, because completely free of microplastics and biodegradable

What you need to keep in mind for Laundry and care of Lyocell clothing

The best part: Lyocell clothing is also easy to care for!

  • Delicate wash cycle  at max 30 degrees
  • Use the bluu Laundry Detergent Sheets  for optimal cleanliness
  • Use no fabric softener
  • We recommend skipping the dryer
  • Instead, reshape the T-shirt by hand and hang it while wet
  • For ironing, it's best to set it to cotton, inside out, without applying heavy pressure
