Maintain swimwear: 5 tips on how to do it right

External influences such as sunscreen, salt water and chlorine can quickly wear out bikinis, bathing suits and swimming trunks, elastic bands can become brittle and unsightly yellow stains can appear. Especially after a summer holiday, you realize how important proper care is for the longevity of your swimwear.

#1 Rinse bikini/swim trunks well

After each wear, you should rinse your bikini or trunks with fresh water to remove salt, sand, sunscreen, and chlorine. Simply rinse it under running water and gently squeeze out excess water. This keeps the fabric clean and reduces fading.

#2 Hand wash

If you need to wash your bikini or trunks, it's a good idea to wash every three wears. Use the bluu washing strips and wash by hand by soaking the bikini/swimming trunks in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and then squeezing them out gently. Avoid rubbing or twisting the bikini or trunks as this can damage or deform the fabric.

#3 Lay down to dry

Never let your bikini or swimming trunks dry in the sun. UV rays can damage fabric and increase fading. Instead, dry it in the shade on a flat surface. Avoid wringing the bikini or trunks, as this will unnecessarily stress and distort the fabric.

Tip:
Squeeze out excess water with a towel by placing the towel on top of the bikini or trunks and gently rolling it up.

#4 Treat stains gently

Avoid applying sunscreen or oils directly to your bikini or trunks, as these can stain. If you want to remove stains such as wax, sunscreen, traces of deodorant or other residues, you can use bluu's stain soap . Wet the affected area, rub in the stain soap and let it sit for a moment before rinsing with water. Note that you should test the stain soap on an inconspicuous area first to make sure you don't damage the fabric.

#5 No tedious emptying

Our washing strips are ideal for on the go, when travelling. These fit perfectly in any luggage and can be taken anywhere without the hassle of emptying them. ;-) You can also easily dissolve the washing strips in a bowl of water and do the laundry by hand. Always and everywhere.

For the environment

Washing your bikini/swimsuit correctly can not only help it last longer but also reduce your environmental impact. According to one study, an average bikini is washed 15 times a year . To minimize the environmental impact, we recommend reducing the number of washes to 5 per year. If you assume a bikini is worn for 5 years, that would mean 25 washes in total. With this measure, you could reduce the environmental impact over the usage phase by up to 66.7% .

In addition, you should use green electricity to further reduce the environmental impact. By combining these two measures, you can reduce water pollution by 28.2% and global warming potential by 14.8%. Switching to green electricity can also bring additional savings of 9.4%.

All in all, by caring for our bikinis/swim trunks properly, but also by choosing high-quality, durable products, we can help reduce the environmental impact and make our clothing last longer. Not only can we wear our favorite bikinis over and over again, but we can also help protect our environment.
